Making Progress

So it’s winter, finally. We’ve been experiencing a very mild winter, but we might actually be getting some snow tonight (although a very small amount). Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the warmer weather, but I’m worried about how this will affect the spring. I’ve heard that the mild winter throughout the country could cause less fruit crops in the spring. Nooo! We need our fruit; it’s like our candy. So I say bring on the cold weather!

So here’s a quick update on our progress so far towards being green:

Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic

Start using  glass Ball jars to store bulk items

Switch to linen napkins

Start a small compost bin

Make our own dishwasher detergent

Shop at the Farmer’s Market (we found the winter farmer’s market)

Switch to reusable bulk bin bags and reusable produce bags

As you can see, we haven’t exactly been following the strict schedule we laid out, but that’s ok. Some of the changes we make just depend on what we’re running out of. For instance, we are running out of paper napkins, so buying cloth napkins became the first priority. We might not run out of Kleenexes for a couple months yet, so it might be a while before we switch to handkerchiefs. But so far, all is going well, and we are excited about saving money (and the planet) in the future!
